Adtec Digital is honored to announce for a second year in a row its innovative technology has been voted into the final three candidates for the World Teleport Association's annual Teleport Awards for Excellence. Adtec's EN-100 Multi-stream Multi-CODEC Encoder product is nominated under the Teleport Technology of the Year category.

The EN-100 is Adtec's 6th generation compression platform. This innovative multi-stream multi-CODEC low delay platform boasts AVC 4:2:2 10 bit, 8 bit, and 4:2:0 plus MPEG 2 4:2:2 and 4:2:0. Concurrent MPEG 4 AVC/H.264 and MPEG 2 encoding enables the delivery of multiple CODEC SD or HD video for use in different receiving environments. The EN-100 represents the new global benchmark for multi-CODEC DSNG, Tier One Contribution and now Tier One distribution platforms.

The EN-100 was instrumental in the encoding and transmission of the world's first 4K live theatre presentation of the National Theatre's (NT) War Horse via satellite into a digital cinema. Adtec is a pioneer in the development technology for the synchronized playback of multiple digital video servers. Having created technology that has allowed Adtec customers to synchronize approximately 100 of their digital video server devices, it was reasonable to assume that similar technology could be used to synchronize multiple encoded streams emanating from Adtec's low latency contribution class encoders so as to provide a 4K encoding solution that could be used by Links Broadcast.

Working in conjunction with Adtec's technical support representatives, Links Broadcast personnel implemented a solution to provide the satellite uplink and downlink facilities to enable the delivery of the War Horse 4K signal from the New London Theatre in to the Curzon Cinema in Chelsea, London. At the event, simultaneous HD and 4K signals were delivered by NEP Visions into two separate Links Broadcast uplink vehicles at the theatre. The Links Broadcast 4K uplink vehicle operated alongside its HD uplink facility which delivered the HD content in to cinemas worldwide. The 4K uplink vehicle encoded the incoming 4K content using four synchronous Adtec EN-100 encoders which combined the incoming signal into a single transport stream via an Adtec DTA-3050 multiplexor for onward transmission via a 1.5m antenna on Links Broadcast's 4K uplink vehicle.

"Innovation has been the core focus for our company for the last 29 years and we are honored to be recognized again by the prestigious World Teleport Association," said Michele Niec, marketing and public relations for Adtec Digital.

WTA will name the winners at a luncheon ceremony on March 11 during the Teleport Awards for Excellence Ceremony and Luncheon at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.

Nashville, Tennessee (April 23, 2014) – PGA TOUR Entertainment needed more live contribution content for its vast distribution networks. The requirement led it just up the road to Adtec Digital in Jacksonville. The challenge was to deliver more excellent quality live contribution back to the PGA TOUR Entertainment production facility located in St. Augustine, Florida. Adtec Digital provided exactly what was needed by supplying a proven, reliable, and innovative contribution solution consisting of 10 live streams encoded in 1080i AVC 4:2:2, encrypted, multiplexed then transmitted using one 36 MHz transponder saturated with 32APSK yielding 125 Mbs.

The solution consisted of Adtec's EN-91P 1080P AVC platform, DTA-3050 Mux and RD-70 IRDs. For the PGA TOUR Entertainment "Transmission Hub" application, the EN-91P encodes and BISS encrypts 1080i AVC 4:2:2 at 12 Mbs per service which is then multiplexed in the DTA-3050 and, transmitted using 32APSK delivering 125 Mbs in a 36 MHz transponder. The DTA and EN-91Ps can concurrently deliver the transport streams over Ethernet.

"The DTA is a proven, reliable, high performance multiplexer ideally suited for dense contribution applications," explained Kevin Ancelin, SVP of sales and service for Adtec Digital. "It provides the glue that ties the 10 services into one high performance MPTS. The EN-91P followed the EN-81 and EN-91 into the market as the MPEG 4 AVC 1080P capable encoder of choice for broadcasters globally. All of Adtec's EN series encoders deliver the most reliable, highest broadcast quality services available for the best fair market value.

The solution is working very well for PGA TOUR Entertainment. "We use the Hub to support various projects," said David Dukes, PGA Tour Entertainment's Senior Director of Technical Operations. "One of the main shows we support is our weekly international telecast of PGA TOUR events. We're also using it to support various individual international broadcast partners working on site at our events. Now that we have 10 concurrent live feeds to source content from, we are able to deliver a richer and more comprehensive distribution package than wasn't previously capable prior to deploying the Adtec Compression platform."

As the industry leader in live SD/HD/1080P/3D and 4K contribution, Adtec Digital understands the challenges of delivering live sporting event coverage for our global broadcast partners. For this solution, Adtec's sales and sales engineering, along with the PGA TOUR Entertainment's engineering and management, working with the RF experts at Mobile Satellite Connection, worked collectively to develop the requirements, test, and ultimately deliver an excellent quality, dense and reliable contribution solution.

"Adtec was the logical choice for PGA TOUR Entertainment," added Ancelin. "Our focus and expertise is four-fold; value, reliability, service, and technology. PGA TOUR Entertainment trusted us from the concept, to testing and ultimately fulfillment of a perfect platform for their requirements. Adtec's compression platform performance and value is unmatched. Our use of and expertise with 32APSK DVBS2 transmissions along with our partners at Mobile Satellite Connection continue to reinforce Adtec's leadership in the live contribution market globally.

Ancelin continued, "This relationship, concept, and project success reinforces our belief that contribution is going the way of dense multiplexing and advanced modulation. Remote camera contribution to a studio for show production is the future."

Live 4K UHDTV – Prime Time NBA Game is a Slam Dunk

By Peter Ostapiuk, Vice President, Media Product Management, Intelsat
Nashville, Tennessee - (December 29, 2014)

As 4K UHDTV gets closer to becoming mainstream, Intelsat and its ecosystem partners continue to provethe readiness of 4K UHDTV technology and the ecosystem.

Last Tuesday night, Intelsat, Time Warner Cable Sports and our ecosystem partners successfully conducted a live 4K UHDTV end-to-end test of the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Golden State Warriors game at the STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles on Time Warner Cable SportsNet. The closed test proves that 4K UHDTV equipment available in the marketplace is ready to transmit a major live sports event from the venue to the home.

The team produced the live transmission of the game using Sony’s PMW-F55 4K cameras and 8000 switcher, and Evertz’s EQX router. Adtec EN-100 Encoders and RD-70 Decoders enabled the transport of the event to Time Warner Cable Sports’ studios. The signal was transported via two paths – one utilizing Intelsat’s premier broadcast video neighborhood, Galaxy 19 at 97˚ West, and the other utilizing Time Warner Cable Sports’ fiber network. Once at the studios, a Cisco encoder converted the signal into an HEVC stream and a Cisco Consumer Set Top Box (G-10) enabled the content to be viewed on a 4K UHDTV television.

This successful 4K UHTVD broadcast is just one of many Intelsat has led the charge on.

June 2013 -- Intelsat and its partners demonstrated a true 4K UHD, end-to-end video transmission over satellite via Galaxy 13, the first transmission of a UHD signal over satellite in North America. September 2013 -- Intelsat and partners demonstrated a true 4K UHDTV, end-to-end video transmission over satellite during IBC2013. This marked the first time a full multi-camera production of a sports event was captured in 4K UHD and transmitted live internationally via satellite and fiber. April 2014 (NAB) and June 2014 (CommunicAsia) -- Intelsat and its partners demonstrated the ecosystem readiness of the commercialization of 4K UHDTV. The team conducted a live transmission of sports programming internationally, further highlighting how production and distribution of exceptional quality 4K UHD images can be achieved alongside existing HD services. The progression of successful demos and live transmission of sports content further supports the findings of Intelsat’s recent Global Survey of Media Executives: 4K UHDTV: Adoption and Business Models. In September 2014, Intelsat’s survey stated that nearly half of the respondents believed that sports will be one of the leading drivers of 4K UHDTV adoption. Last week’s successful test is further evidence that 4K UHDTV is on track to becoming mainstream and the viewing preference for premier sporting events.
